"Linux and CinePaint: OSS in Hollywood"

Linux is the #1 operating system in Hollywood feature film animation and visual effects, for both servers and desktops. Why are Disney, DreamWorks, ILM, Pixar, and Sony running on Linux? And, why are the studios' filmmaker tools running on Linux all proprietary except one?

CinePaint was used to retouch films such as Harry Potter and Spider-Man. It was used to add flying arrows in The Last Samurai. For 2006 CinePaint has a totally new architecture based on FLTK, a fast free portable GUI API contributed by the film industry. What's new in the open source CinePaint project and what does it mean for film industry and pro photography users?

The Cerritos Linux Users Group will next meet on: Saturday, May 13, 2006 in SCC 800 on the east side of California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA from 11:00AM to 3:00PM. The closest parking to SCC 800 (Building 8 on the campus map) is available in Lot 2 for $3 all day. Alternatively, street-side parking may be available on Victoria St. Net access, donuts and coffee will be provided by our generous hosts.

We're an association of over 300 technologists advancing Linux motion picture technology. Linux is the dominant software technology in feature film animation and visual effects, used in practically every blockbuster movie in theaters today.
